Chapter Nine

Bradon and Leslie raced down the hall, the wee Stewart lassie wailing the whole time.

He didn’t dare enter the bairn’s mind knowing full well her parents would swoop down on him in a rage. And he would not have blamed them. Entering a bairn’s thoughts was a great affront to magic. Their minds were too young, too fragile. One touch from an adult wizard’s mind could have ruined her for life.

As they made their way through the crowd in the great hall toward the front door he looked around, alarmed. None seemed put out. In fact, all were celebrating. By the time they made it to the courtyard, he stopped rushing and started walking.

“What exactly has your Da, lassie?” he finally asked.

The girl pointed to the backside of the castle. “Up on the mountain yonder. ‘Tis mighty!”

Bradon nodded at Leslie and smiled so that she wouldn’t worry. No harm had come to Alan. At least not anything that meant his demise. He ruffled the girl’s hair as they walked around the backside. “I believe ye me wee lassie. Let us go see if I can save him, aye?”

“Aye!” she said, eyes wide.

The Stewart castle had changed little in forty years. He still knew the side paths that stemmed out after the rear drawbridge and wound around up through the trees. But the way was dark through the pines.

Bradon stopped and turned to Leslie. “Why dinnae you try a bit o’ magic to help light the way?”

“Me?” She shook her head. “Sorry, I don’t think—”

“Oh aye,” he cut her off. “You’ve the ability. All you have to do is focus.”

The bairn’s eyes grew wider and wider. “We need to get to Da.”

Bradon nodded and looked at Leslie. “So you best give it a shot soon so I dinnae trip with the wee bairn.”

“Oh, aren’t you something.” Leslie again shook her head and looked pointedly at the bairn. “How about we try this later so we don’t stress her out too much.”

“What makes you think of light?” he asked.

She lowered her brows. “You’re joking right?”

“Nay, think of something that lights your way and visualize it. ‘Twill make the way easier for us.”

Obviously distressed, the little girl looked at her in desperation.

“Close your eyes and picture it then visualize it lighting our path,” he urged. “‘Tis as simple as that.”

Bradon couldn’t help but crawl inside her mind when she closed her eyes and concentrated. He smiled as he listened. Simple? Ha! Fine. Whatever. She pictured her car’s headlights on going down a dark road. She needed to see the way and they lit up the pavement.

“Ah! There you go,” Bradon said.

Leslie opened her eyes, shocked to see a stream of light pouring out ahead of them. Her thoughts were clear. I couldn’t have possibly done that!

And she hadn’t. He had. But he wanted her to start believing in the magi she possessed.

“Well done, lass.” Bradon continued on.

“Really?” Leslie appeared baffled as she followed.

Soon enough, a whole new trail of light poured through the trees and they arrived at a massive swath of meadow tucked against the mountainside.
