“Mr. Lucky, you’re sure that’s his name,” Elizabeth asked as she shuffled the pages Sir Jonathan handed her?

“Yes, according to Alex’s letter, these are the notes provided by Sasha Bonnaire. She is now responsible for the Marie Adele’s Foundation and Trust. Villa Adele’s hotel has been her home since she was five years old. This copy of Marie’s diary about living in the Klondike during the gold rush is fascinating. Did you know approximately thirty-thousand people came to Dawson City on the Klondike River, only a few hundred came back home wealthy Marie Adele was one of them?”

“This is the photo Sylvester provided of the Dagger,” Lucie asked as she held the picture up to the light? “I can barely make out the Buddha they told us about. Is Sue Lee on her way to see it?”

“Yes, she should be there now,” Jane said, joining everyone on the porch. “It is so nice to be back here. My swim was refreshing. Sebastian was out by the reef; he said your new regulator arrived, Jonathan.” Jane was glad to see her uncle had taken up diving because of his friendship with Sebastian, who was doing a study of the Bahama coral sea life for his next book. “Sue Lee told me she would wire you with her report about the dagger before sending a written copy.” Their housekeeper handed Jane a glass of lemonade, “Thank you, Connie.”

“Your mother has Marie’s diary if you wish to read it. I will be in my office. Jarvis sent the books I requested on the Ottoman Empire; I need to research them before Sue Lee contacts me with her findings.”

Along with his wife Rebecca, Jarvis is the caretakers looking after the family’s London townhouse during their absence. Jane, too, had asked for some books, one, in particular, written by Amelia Earhart. Last Flight, a collection of her log entries and written notes published posthumously by George Putnam as a tribute to his wife that Jane was interested in reading again.

“Did my books arrive with the others?”

“I have them, dear, Elizabeth pointed at the table beside her before she was lost again in Marie Adele’s diary, my what a captivating diary,” passing the finished page to Lucie.

Lucie, too, was absorbed as they shared, “You’re right, she is a pistol!”

“I will be out at the beach, reading,” Jane said, taking her book and lemonade, not sure if anyone heard.

After meeting in Hawaii with Mr. Sakata at his home in the Waipio Valley, who was the Straits Times photographer in Singapore in 1937, when Amelia Earhart stopped for repairs and fuel on her last flight, Jane had questions as she walked down the path to the beach.

Mr. Sakata photographed Amelia, but in the background was General Yamashita, and Mr. Wu dressed in Panama suits looking like a tourist.
