Chapter Nine

As I walked down the beach back toward the spot where I’d left all my stuff, I kept laughing as I pictured Zane after I’d dunked him. Even when I wasn’t laughing, I couldn’t stop smiling. My cheeks were even starting to ache.

“Hey, babe. Come over here, and I’ll show you something that’ll really make you smile.”

With a sick clench in my gut, I looked to my left and saw a group of guys setting up for the day. I wasn’t even sure which one of them had been the jerk talking to me because they were all laughing and raking their slimy eyes over me.

I knew from past experience that it was best to ignore guys like this. As much as I wanted to slap them all on their smug, drooling faces or snap back at them, responding only gave them an opening to keep going. So I kept walking.

“Hey, what? You too good for me?”

I glanced back over my shoulder. Now I knew exactly which one it was, because he was following me. He was a tall guy, decently built—and definitely stronger than me. He carried a tallboy in his hand, and the smirk on his face showed me he was looking for a good time...and he thought I was it.

My whole body reacted. My skin crawled, my stomach churned, and my heart raced with fear. I looked around for Zane but didn’t see him anywhere. “Go away.”

“It’s a public beach. I can go wherever I want.”

I clenched my teeth and walked faster. I skirted around a sandcastle and the kids building it, but the guy kept coming, keeping pace but staying right behind me. I could almost feel his eyes on my skin, and unlike that morning, when I’d known Zane was checking me out, this was not a pleasant feeling.

“Come on, sweetheart. Drink a beer with me. I’ve got plenty for a girl with boobs like yours.”

I kept my eyes ahead, desperately hoping to get close to my friends before this guy tried to make a worse move on me. But then, out of nowhere, I heard a slapping, crashing sound and a yell. Spinning around, I saw Zane with his big paddleboard staring down at Creepy Dude, who was now covered in his own beer, muddy with sand, and so dazed he couldn’t move.

“Man, did I hit you?” Zane asked. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to stop you from harassing my girl. Tell you what—just lie there till we’re gone so I don’t hit you again.”

Never before had I realized that Zane’s talent for being a punk was actually his superpower. And he’d just used it to save me with style.

Still shaken but also amused at the way Zane had handled the situation, I was too stunned to argue when he came up to me and led me away with his arm around my waist. I could feel his anger in the tense set of his muscles and shoulder, as well as in the protective grip of his hand just above my hip.
