Chapter Nine

When it was still dark, Billy heard his grandmother getting up and going down to the kitchen. He quickly threw on some clothes and went down to join her.

“Good morning, honey,” she said with a smile when she saw him, “you didn’t need to get up yet.”

“Is that coffee?” he nodded at her mug.

“Yes,” she laughed lightly. “Remember when you were little and you’d ask to drink coffee with me and Grandpa? I would pour you hot milk. You were so cute.”

Billy smiled at her and at the memory.

“How are you doing, Billy?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.

“I’m fine, Grandma.”

She looked at him intently for a moment. “Okay. Just remember, if you ever want to talk, I’m here.”

“I know. Really, I’m fine. Actually, I’m doing pretty well.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. I’ve…I’ve stopped taking my anxiety medication…and don’t worry, I called the doctor first and made sure I did it right.”

“Well, that’s wonderful. Your anxiety is gone?”

“Not gone…but, I don’t know…less? It’s not as bad as it used to be.”

“Does it have something to do with Dan?”

Billy blinked and thought about it. It did seem like he had started feeling better ever since Dan was around.

“I don’t know. I guess maybe it does. It’s kind of hard to get so worked up over things when he’s already so over the top.”

“He’s a nice boy, Billy.”

“We’re not…we’re just friends,” he was quick to tell her.

“Well, he’s a good friend to have. Want to help me with the dinner?”

They worked together putting the turkey on, peeling potatoes, and making pie. Dan stumbled in and walked straight to the coffee. He was wearing a pair of sushi pajamas and looked half asleep.

“I can’t believe you people are up at this hour. I applaud you and pledge my troth to you, dear Grandma, and I will dutifully assist in the washing of dishes.”

She laughed at that, and Billy gave him a warm smile.

Ross came in dressed and ready for the morning. “Good morning all,” he said with a smile, but gave a heavy sigh when he saw the empty pot sitting on the coffee maker. He glared at Dan who gave him a wink.

“Excuse me, Allison, but would you mind making me a pot of coffee? I was hoping to get some work done while you all work your magic in the kitchen.”

Billy’s grandmother blinked and smiled. “Of course, dear. You just go sit in the living room. I think there might be a game or something on.” She wrinkled her nose and waved her hand, “You just take it easy.”

“Thanks,” he beamed at her.

When he’d left, she walked over to the pantry and grabbed the coffee.

“Grandma, let me,” said Billy a little nervously. She held up her hand, but smiled at Dan as he put water in the carafe.

“It’s fine, honey. He’s our guest, and we need to make him feel welcome.”

Billy shifted uncomfortably. “He doesn’t realize how he sounds.”

“William,” she snapped, looking at her grandson, “do not take on responsibility for the actions of others, not even those you love.
