Chapter Twelve

“Are you sure you will be okay?” Lory asked.

“Yeah,” Robin said. “I will be fine.”

He nodded and turned around, walking away from her. She stood in the corridor as the guard checked through her pockets, and then she was allowed to enter. After Lory had reported his finding, the Deputy Commissioner had decided that the best course of action would be another meeting with Richard Salvador. She had delivered the orders to Robin first thing in the morning, and Lory had been kind enough to drop her at the prison. Sally was waiting for her as usual, and she was in her everyday talkative mood.

“My little boy is adorable, even if he is a bit naughty,” she said, laughing. “I love him so much, but he is such a handful at times. Greg always says that he was like that when he was a boy, but I think I have an exceptional demon on my hands. Oh well, what can we do? Boys will be boys, right?”

“Right,” Robin said, not really listening.

“Well, here you are,” Sally said, pushing the door open. “Don’t know how you do this, honestly.”

“I have to,” Robin said. “The life of the man I love is on the line.”

This seemed to silence Sally, who quietly closed the door after her. Robin sat down in the chair, and a few minutes later, Richard Salvador appeared, bearing his usual sneer.

“Robin!” he said. “I didn’t expect to see you so soon!”

“Richard,” Robin said as a form of greeting.

“Well, to what do I owe the pleasure?” he asked, grinning from ear to ear.

“I am sorry to inform you that I found your mother. Unfortunately, she was dead in her apartment,” Robin said robotically.

“Oh?” he asked, the smile still on his face.

“Serene was murdered,” she said. “Someone attacked her late at night and brutally stabbed her. The interesting thing is that a witness saw a strange man leaving the apartment complex at the time of the murder.”

“Hmm,” Richard Salvador said, still smiling.

“Do you know this person?” Robin asked, placing a copy of the sketch on the desk.

“Why do you think I would know him?” he asked.

“Well, he is the one who kidnapped Abby for you,” Robin said. “And he killed Serene for you too, didn’t he?”

“You bore me, Detective,” he said. “I expected you to be more fun. Do you think I would answer a question like that?”

“Your mother is dead,” Robin said, deadpan. “You asked me to bring her to you, but you knew she was already dead, didn’t you? Why did you send me there? Why did you make a demand you knew I could never fulfill.”

“I assure you, Detective,” he said. “Things are not as they seem. I am surprised you haven’t caught on yet. I am.”

“Tell me where Kyle is,” Robin snarled.

“Everything has a price, Detective,” he said silkily. “Question is, what are you willing to pay.”

Robin just glared at him, refusing to answer, and he started to laugh.

“Oh, you amaze me,” he said. “Tell you what.
