7: Drennan

He was a glutton for bad decisions. At least that was what Drennan believed. His very first bad decision was joining the military. He didn't regret his training or his achievements in the first Rebel War or aiding in the Union's success. He didn't even regret meeting Kirrin. What he regretted the most was by being associated with a man like Kirrin had led to his sister's demise.

His next bad decision was attempting to murder Kirrin without a plan. If a thing needed to be done right, it needed to be planned ahead. But on that fateful day when he'd charged into Kirrin's quarters, he'd had no plans. Ruled by rage and grief, all he'd had was the desperate and determined need for revenge. This bad decision would have cost him twelve years of his freedom in prison if Weiss' father's influence hadn't lessened it to five.

In comparison to his other bad decisions, kissing Caitlin Oyari didn't rank very high. But he couldn't shake the feeling that doing so was going against some principle, some code of honour. She was a human. He should not be kissing her or wanting her. Especially after what one of her kind had done to his kind. To be intimate with or have any other feelings for Caitlin was akin to dishonouring sister. It was proof he had forgotten he was the reason for Leina's death.

Yet as he drove Lucy toward a motel, Drennan couldn't deny the pleasure of Caitlin's soft body pressed up against his. He could feel the shape of her breasts against his back and the gentle warm air through his clothing as she breathed. When he'd held her in his arms at Weiss' store, her body had fit so perfectly in his arms, he'd never wanted to let her go. Kissing her may be forbidden, but kissing her and more was all he wanted to do.

He couldn't wait to get to Kalpalar so he could leave her there. He had no intention of enduring the return trip back to Earth with her on the ship even if it meant sacrificing a lump sum of dehna. She was trouble and temptation wrapped up in a beautiful and alluring package, and the longer he stuck around her, the cloudier his principles and his prejudices toward her kind became.

The nearest motel was perched on the outskirts of the city, yet not too far away from where the ship was being maintained. There wasn't much space left to park Lucy in the motel's parking lot so Drennan locked her somewhere unobtrusive.

The reason for the stuffed parking lot was soon made clear as they approached the motel's entrance. Muridians. A whole lot of them lounging around outside engaged in conversation in their rough language.

Beside him, Caitlin made a small sound of displeasure. She clutched the hood of the cloak closer to her face to obscure her identity as she glanced fearfully in the direction of the group of muridians. She looked so fragile and
