minutes I was back in the car and on my way to the hospital where I worked as a social

worker, with two sets of camouflage fatigues in my trunk, one set in my size and one in Ty’s.

I also managed to stop at the store and pick up several large bags of assorted chocolate

candies in miniature sizes. I’ve found over the years that no matter what you hand out at

Halloween, kids like chocolate best. I guess that’s true of adults, too. I certainly love

chocolate and I know that Ty does as well. In fact, I didn’t think it was a good idea to tell

him where the bags of candy were before the kids got there or, as the old nursery rhyme

goes, Mother Hubbard’s cupboard would be bare.

When I got home that night, I hid the candy in the small cabinet by the front door and

put the costumes in our bedroom. When Ty got home a little while later, I took him in the

bedroom and showed him the costumes. At first, he balked at the idea of dressing up.

“Those ain’t regulation,” he growled, complaining.

“And neither of us is in the Corps,” I argued back.

My mate could be ungodly stubborn at times, and I’d learned that standing up to his

growling was the best way to handle him. It was the only thing he respected.

“Why the fuck do we have to dress up?”

“Because it’s fun and the kids love it when we do. I was Gandalf the Wizard from The

Hobbit last year.”

“I still don’t feel right about putting on a uniform.”

“I figured you’d feel most comfortable in it. After all, you still have the boots for it.”

The only shoes that Ty still had when he’d been admitted to the hospital were a pair of

combat boots he’d worn in Iraq. At this reminder, Ty blushed, embarrassed at the

sentimentality of keeping those boots at the back of our closet all this time, even though he

never wore them anymore.

“Okay. I suppose you’ll just hound me until I do it anyway.”
