CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Miami, Florida

Anna was in an untenable situation. The only two options in front of her were bad. If she accepted Jorge Ramirez’s offer, she’d be going against everything she wanted for her future. But if she refused, she was pretty sure Ramirez would kill her. Or would he give Alejandro the task? She couldn’t tell. Behind his quaint facade, there was a darker side to Ramirez. Anna could sense it. He was a dangerous man and obviously capable of extreme violence. Why else would the Spider employ him?

The Spider.

She wondered how General Peraza had earned his nickname. And who the hell had started giving nicknames to narcos? Last year, her family had had to deal with the Black Tosca, and now the Spider?

“Miss Garcia? What would you like to do?” Ramirez asked, bringing her out of her reverie.

“How long will this arrangement last?” she asked, drinking the last of her Perrier.

“For as long as the Spider says it does,” Ramirez replied.

“And what is the product you’d like us to distribute for you?”

“Continue to distribute, Miss Garcia,” Ramirez corrected her. “Our chemists came up with a new synthetic amphetamine that can block pain at its source, improve muscular strength and performance, and remain completely undetectable by drug tests.”

“What’s so novel about that?”

“We can mass-produce it for less than ten cents a pill, and we made it approximately three times more addictive than heroin.”

That last bit terrified her, considering that heroin was one of the most addictive drugs on the market. If what Ramirez was saying was true, an entire generation could be at risk. The amphetamine epidemic that had started eight weeks ago was far from over. In fact, it would continue to expand. She forced a smile. “And how much would we be selling these pills for?”

“Two dollars a pop.”

Anna’s eyes went wide with shock. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

“Yes, I know,” Ramirez said. “A profit margin so high it’s almost unheard of. So what will it be? Are you in or out, Miss Garcia?”

Funny how Ramirez made it sound as if she had a choice. Live or die.

“Maybe I was foolish in wanting to steer my organization into something we’re clearly not,” she conceded, doing her very best to sound sincere. “Your proposition makes financial sense for all parties. Alejandro was correct in his assessment.”

“See? I told you,” Ramirez said, turning to Alejandro.

Alejandro didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t argue. Maybe Ramirez had threatened him too. She would have to find out who had made first contact with the other, Ramirez or Alejandro.

“I’m glad we’ve figured this thing out,” Ramirez continued, pulling a cell phone from the breast pocket of his suit jacket. “Excuse me a moment. I have a quick text to send.”

Alejandro’s features remained impassive. The same couldn’t be said about the four terrorists. They weren’t shy about openly displaying their disdain for her.

“Thanks for coming, Miss Garcia,” Ramirez said, putting down his phone on the white tablecloth. “I’ll be in touch.”

Anna swallowed her indignation at being dismissed and smiled.
