Iâm happy I told Nolan everything about my past with Heather. Itâs not something I enjoy talking about, but part of me feels less burdened after our talk. Nolan has that way about him that makes me relax.
I hate what I did to Heather. I hate that I let her down, and by doing so, I let Hailey down too. But the guilt of it all has been eating me alive for so long. And Nolan didnât seem to judge me at all. In fact, he tried to defend me.
Which is kind but not necessary. I shouldnât have slept with Heather. I knew I was gay. I knew I didnât feel the same way about her as she felt about me. But she was my best friend, the only one I thought who truly cared about me. When I told her I was gay, I expected her to be mad but not to hate me. The reality was a horrifying shock. Iâd never seen her angrier than she was then, never heard her spit hateful words like she did.
She never looked at me the same. It was like I disgusted her.
Until I met Nolan, Iâd held everyone at armâs length, never spending much time with anyone. Now that I have him as a friend, Iâm happier. I feel lighter somehow. I find myself grinning as I walk up the stairs to my apartment, quietly unlocking the door and walking inside.
My heart thunders rapidly in my chest when I see Nolan fast asleep on my couch. The lamp on the table next to the couch is on, and heâs wearing black-rimmed glasses Iâve never seen him wear before, a book open and lying on his chest as he sleeps.
I donât see Hailey anywhere so she must be asleep. I walk over to him, grabbing the book carefully and closing it before placing it on the coffee table. Nolan stirs, a sleepy smile on his face before his beautiful eyes open, taking in my outfit.
Itâs my usual Glitter attire. Jeans and a white t-shirt, covered in rainbow glitter after my shift. âHey. Good night?â
I nod happily, sitting down and moving his socked feet to my lap. âYeah. I have enough for that Barbie Dream House and then some.â
He chuckles at that and makes no effort to move. He stretches his long arms above his head, showing off a sexy sliver of his muscled stomach and strong, cut arms. âSheâs going to love it. Youâre an amazing father.â
Heâs been telling me that more and more since I told him about Heather last week, but itâs genuine. I know it is. âThank you. I just want to give her the best.â
âYou do,â he says matter-of-factly, and I canât help feeling a deep sense of pride. âWere they unruly tonight?â He sits up, dragging his feet off my lap and moving closer to me.
âNo more than usual. It was actually a little slow.â
He smiles at that, his lips dragging along my neck. âItâs the cold.
