A.D. told Smith, “Show the Sheriff the tracks I have found and the direction I am tracking the horse and the rustlers.”

A.D. caught up with the rustlers in about forty-five minutes, because both of their horses were sick from eating some harmful weeds. They offered no resistance when A.D. approached them with his gun drawn. The rustlers and their horses were a pitiful sight. He didn’t think any of them had a meal for several days. A.D. did what he could for the horses hoping they didn’t founder and die.

He asked the boys, “Why did you take my horse?”

“We don’t have a stud,” They answered, “and our three mares are over ten years old. If we had a stud we could probably get some new colts.”

A.D. asked, “What do you feed your horses?”

They replied, “We don’t have any feed so they eat grass in spring, summer and fall and a little bit of hay in the winter. Mister, we don’t even have enough food for ourselves much less for the horses.” On the way back, the Sheriff and Maggie caught up with A.D. and the rustlers.

Sheriff said, “Do you boys know that stealing horses is a hanging offense?” After a period of silence, he continued, “Well, I’ll have to take you over and lock you up.”

A.D. said, “Please don’t do that let’s try another approach here. Maybe if we care for their horses and cure the sickness we can feed them. Then feed the boys, because I am sure they haven’t eaten in sometime.”

The Sheriff said “Okay, A.D., if that’s what you want but don’t come crying to me if they steal from you again because, I won’t help you out.”

A.D. said, “Actually, I think I’m the one who caught these guys, not you.” The Sheriff just shook his head and rode away.

When the group got back to the campground Maggie fixed a large lunch and the rustlers ate as if they were starved. A.D. and Weldon had not eaten because they were getting Gray Boy ready for the first race at one o’clock.

In the meantime, Frank came back to camp and told A.D., “You tied with another man named Pete in the shooting contest and split the three hundred-dollar winnings handing him one-hundred fifty dollars.” A.D. told him what had been happening over the last five hours, then everyone was off to see the horse races. Gray Boy was running in the second race with ten others as there were a total of forty-four horses entered. Gray Boy won his first race by three lengths. A.D. was worried that he was probably too tired but Gray Boy had the championship race yet to run which would be at 3:30. The boys went to cool the hooves and legs of Gray Boy and then brought him back to the stall in the barn. The two rustlers had stayed close by A.D. and had sincerely apologized for what they had done. When everyone got back to the barn, A.D. tried to treat the rustler’s two horses.
