A PRESSURE IN KINJO'S BLADDER suddenly telegraphed a signal to his brain that he not only needed to piss, but needed to do it now, this second.

"Does this place have a head?"

Dexter pointed at a teak door.

"Through there," he said. "Be sure to flush, this isn't my boat."

Right.

He headed that way and said over his shoulder, "The painting's fine. Just leave it right there, I'll pack it back in myself." He opened the door and found the head in a small room immediately to the left. Up ahead was the main sleeping quarters. He peeked in, just for grins, and found it empty.

He was halfway done relieving himself when something unexpected happened.

Dexter said, "What are you doing here?"

Then a gun erupted, twice.

Dexter made an awful sound.

Something heavy thumped to the floor.

Voices came from the cabin, two different voices, neither was Dexter's.

Kinjo darted into the sleeping quarters and looked for a way out. There was a large hatch over the bed. He opened it and muscled up. Just as his legs cleared, multiple shots erupted.

Bam!

Bam!

Bam!

Bam!

Cabin wood exploded.

Kinjo took two giant steps to the edge of the boat and dived headfirst over the railing.

Cold salty water immediately engulfed him.

It filled his ears and nose and eyes.

He stayed under as long as he could.

When he surfaced, chop washed over him just as he took a breath.

He swallowed water and choked.
