WEAKENING BARRIERS OF ENTRY

It doesn’t matter if you are new to technology and social media or have been using it since grade school; that’s the beauty of the Internet—it’s there for everyone when they are ready to embrace it. There is no reason to shy away from or be intimidated by it.

The Internet and free access to social media have completely transformed how we interact with each other, how we reach each other, how others can reach us, and the very fundamentals of sales and commerce. Decades ago, when people wanted to start a business, they would typically rent an office, get furniture, get square footage, advertise, and hope to see a return on their investments at some point in the future. Nowadays you may not need an office or employees. You just need an Internet connection. You are only limited by your resourcefulness. (If you want to learn more, one of the more influential books in this space is The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss.)

If you get eyeballs on your product or service—if you get any and all attention—you will make money. You just need to get people interested. You don’t have to go door-to-door to sell anymore—not that that doesn’t work, it’s just no longer the only option or even the main option. You also don’t have to have a degree in marketing to market yourself to thousands of people. You don’t have to have a production line, warehouse, and shipping network to sell a product. You don’t even need to have your own product!

Take Ryan Kaji, an eight-year-old boy who made $26 million in 2019 simply by reviewing toys on YouTube. People with kids may already be familiar with this young phenomenon. He is an eight-year-old toy reviewer. His profession is playing with toys. And he has made millions in advertising from his videos. Even five or six years ago, most businesses were wondering if social media made sense as part of their customer service, marketing, and outreach, but now it’s just assumed to be a huge part of how any company works. Ryan soon had his own line of toys in Walmart and Target, because those stores know where the eyeballs are going, and they want to be a part of what Ryan is offering. These stores paid him to talk about their toys and drive traffic to their points of purchase. He sold his own experience with the toys without creating a single product. Today you can strategically build an audience around an interest point, turn that into a following, and turn that following into an income without buying a single square foot of billboard space.

The barrier to entry is almost nonexistent. With enough effort and research, you can get in front of thousands of people with a few clicks of a button. You can do it the traditional way and still make money, but if you don’t embrace the Internet and you don’t embrace social media out of fear or feeling intimidated by them, you’re going to lose a ton of business.
