CHAPTER 19

Damien and I continue to talk. The conversation flows naturally, and before I realize it, I find myself opening up about everything that happened with Mr. Anderson. At first, I feel a twinge of vulnerability, unsure if I should share such personal details with someone I've only recently met, but Damien's attentiveness and nonjudgmental demeanor put me at ease, making it easy for me to confide in him.

He listens intently as I recount the uncomfortable encounters with my former tutor, the unfair grade I received, and the emotional toll it took on me. Damien's reaction surprises me; he doesn't dismiss my feelings or try to downplay the seriousness of the situation. Instead, he reassures me that what I experienced was not okay and that I had every right to feel upset about it.

In a way, sharing my experience with Damien feels cathartic. It's as if a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, knowing that someone else understands and supports me. His genuine concern and empathy make me feel validated, and I appreciate the space he creates for me to share my story without judgment.

I'm grateful for Damien's presence and the unexpected connection we've formed. He makes me feel seen and heard, and I can't help but wonder how this newfound friendship might evolve in the future.

Although friendship isn’t the best word choice now is it…

Damien draws lazy circles on my stomach. “You know, Robyn, I've learned that sometimes, sharing our experiences with someone we trust can be a powerful way to process and heal from difficult situations.”

I nod and look away. “Yeah, I guess you're right. It's just been so frustrating dealing with Mr. Anderson and his inappropriate behavior.”

He places a comforting hand on mine. “I can only imagine how uncomfortable that must have been for you. No one should have to go through something like that, especially in an academic setting.”

I sigh. “It's been a lot to handle, and I felt so alone, like no one would understand what I was going through.”

“Well, you don't have to feel alone anymore,” he says, his tone surprisingly gentle. “I'm here for you, and I believe you did the right thing by speaking up about it.”

I look up at him, and a sense of relief washes over me. “Thank you, Damien. Your support means a lot to me.”

He smiles warmly. “Of course, Robyn. Friends look out for each other, right?”

I laugh. “Yeah, they do. I never expected to find a friend like you when I came to Juniper College.”

He chuckles softly. “Life is full of surprises, isn't it? I'm glad we met, though, and I hope I can be there for you in whatever way you need.”

A growing sense of comfort and trust blossoms within me. “I believe you will be. It's just nice to know I have someone to talk to who understands.” I smirk. “Although friends…”

He winks at me before gently squeezing my hand. “You can count on me, Robyn. And if there's anything else you ever want to talk about, I'm here.
