AB: You’ve worked on subsequent adaptations of King’s work. Where does The Stand rest in your catalogue of work, in your heart?

MG: Well, it is by far the most massive thing I’ve ever done. Emotionally, I keep shuttling between The Stand and The Shining. First of all, they’re my two favorite King books. Secondly, The Stand became the most successful miniseries in history, from what I was told by the ABC people at the time. To know that it connected with people on that level was amazing. The Shining is more polished work as a filmmaker. It’s a much smaller canvas, but because of that I was able to use the language of cinema a little more fully, because it offered the time to plan and make things happen the way I’d hoped. Between the two of those, it’s a tough juggling match. When somebody comes to me and tells me how much they love The Stand, then it’s The Stand (laughs). When somebody comes and says The Shining…more people remember The Stand than The Shining, but The Shining got even better reviews. The Stand was very well reviewed, but The Shining, at the time, virtually every review was really, really, really good. The kind of reviews that make you a little misty. When somebody connects with your work in such a positive way, it’s an amazing emotional response that you get, I’ll be honest.
