Osprey

•Barn Owls. This owl has a strange, heart-shaped face. These raptors are true friends of the farmer because they eat primarily rodents. By roosting in farmers’ barns and other buildings they have a steady supply of mice and rats to eat that otherwise would feed upon the farmers’ grain.

•Burrowing Owls+. This unusual owl nests underground, sometimes digging its own hole or sometimes using a Gopher Tortoise burrow or an Armadillo hole. They are a Species of Special Concern in Florida because the open fields and pastures where they dig their underground homes are often turned into citrus groves, golf courses, or housing developments. They are unique among Florida’s owls because of their occasional diurnal (daytime) activities, which allow people to observe them more easily.
