Chapter 63

Contralateral Needling

Yellow Emperor: I have heard about contralateral needling, but I know little about its profound meaning. What exactly is called contralateral needling?

Qibo: After invading the body, evil Qi lingers first in the skin and hair; if not dispelled, it will involve the minute collaterals; if still not dispelled, it will invade the collaterals; if lingering without being dispelled, it will invade the meridians connecting five solid viscera, be distributed among stomach and intestines, involve both Yin and Yang, and damage the five solid viscera; it is the order of evil invasion, starting from the skin and hair and moving finally into five solid viscera, so the disease can be treated by acupuncture on the meridians concerned. Now evil Qi invades the skin and hair, lingers in the minute collaterals without being dispelled but with blockage; it is unable to invade meridians, and thus gets scattered in the large collaterals, leading to uncommon diseases. After invading the large collaterals, evil Qi will shunt from the left to the right and vice versa. Flowing down and up or invading left or right, evil Qi will interfere with meridians and spread over the ends of four limbs; its flow is indefinite and it doesn’t run through acupoints on meridians, so the therapy is termed contralateral needling.

Emperor: I’d like to know what contralateral needling is, and why using this treating of disease on the left can be done by needling on the right or vice versa. Also, how to distinguish it from opposite needling?

Qibo: Invading meridians, the luxuriance of evil Qi on the left will cause disease on the right or vice versa; there is also transference and interchange such as the presence of unrelieved pain on the left followed by corresponding disease on the right meridian, for which the opposite needling should be applied on only the meridians instead of collaterals affected. Because the pain of collateral disease doesn’t affect the same part of the body as that of meridian disease, the therapy is termed contralateral needling.

Emperor: I’d like to know how to apply contralateral needling and what acupoints are selected?

Qibo: Invasion of evil into the collaterals of foot-Shaoyin causes sudden heart pain, sticking fullness of chest and the hypochondria; without accumulation, the acupoint Rangu (KI02)∗ is needled till bleeding, and the disease can be cured in the time of a meal; if not relieved, the disease on the left is treated on the right and vice versa; the new disease can be cured in this way in five days.

Invasion of evil into the collaterals of hand-Shaoyang causes throat obstruction, curled tongue, dry mouth, vexation, pain in the lateral border of the arm, and failure to put hands upon the head, which can be treated with needling acupoints Guanchong (TE01) lateral to little finger and on the ring finger by the width of one leaf of Chinese chive each once;
