The next morning, Karim does not hurry away for his training as he usually does. His thoughts are all for me. When he returns from bathing, he finds me standing by the window staring out, and opening his robe, he encloses me in warm silk. ‘You already do that, my lord.’

‘And I will continue to do so, but I know you too well, Celestina, and I can’t risk you taking any more chances with your life. You will train under the supervision of one of my most highly regarded generals, Vigia Complexus.’

I nod. ‘How long must I be parted from you in order to complete this training?’

‘Celestina.’ Karim’s harsh face softens as he draws me into his arms. ‘I will make you my warrior queen. Isn’t that honour worth spending a little time apart?’

‘Nothing is worth a single second away from you, my lord.
