As far as I can judge by my own feelings and by what I know of those of others it seems to me very unlikely that any lady will be found with a sense of the arduous and responsible nature of the duties attaching to the direction of our Institution, such as would fit her to take a lead in its affairs, who would be willing to take the office if deprived of the assistance to be derived from the constant supervision of the Master, the opportunity of referring difficult cases to him and having the weight of his authority always, in support of her own. Some such guide & counsellor every woman placed in such a position would require whatever her gifts & capabilities might be; and if no such coadjutor is supplied her, she will be obliged to find one for herself.

It would seem essential to good order that where two are jointly placed in authority over others, one should be head and principal. And when one of the two is a man and the other a woman the spirit of St Paul’s injunctions that the woman should not teach–should not usurp authority–should be in silence–would seem to require that she should hold the second, rather than the first place, especially when, as in the present case, the religious education & training of the community is the main object for which it has been formed and on this account a clergyman has the superintendence of it.

Whatever honor may be shewn to her still it will be ‘as to the weaker vessel’ & I think it ought so to be, and that if she is wise she will not consent to accept supreme authority.
