I woke up before Lydia or anyone else and quietly slipped out of bed, got my robe, and went to the kitchen. I put the coffee on to brew and washed the wine glasses from the night before. I had just enough time to empty the dish washer before the coffee was ready. I poured two cups and took them back up to the bedroom, feeling almost giddy at getting to be the one to wake Lydia up.

She was still sound asleep when I pushed open the bedroom door and closed it gently behind me. It was almost a pity to wake her, but I couldn’t resist having her to myself for just a few minutes before the twins woke up.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and put the coffees on the bedside table before leaning down to kiss her cheek.

She hummed as her body began to move, stretching and pushing itself around under the blankets and pillow.

“Good morning,” I said softly.

Lydia’s eyes opened and slowly rolled to look at me before widening.

“I made you some coffee,” I told her. “Relax, the kids aren’t up yet. You’ve got some time.”

Lydia sat up, then, noticing she was naked, wrenched up the blankets to cover herself.

“Oh my god,” she said.

“It’s alright, just relax,” I said, trying to pass her a coffee cup.

“It’s not,” she replied, pushing her legs past me and collecting her pajamas. She quickly began throwing them on. “I can’t let the kids see me coming out of here. Oh my god, I can’t believe I did this.”

“Lydia,” I said, reaching for her wrist, but she evaded me. “It’s alright, really. Come enjoy your coffee with me.”

“I’m alright, thank you,” she said, pulling her top over her head. Without a look toward me or another word, she slipped out the bedroom door.

I sat there, listening to her trying to quietly pad down the hallway to her room before I heard her door close.

I should have let her sleep, I thought as the feeling of rejection passed through me.
