Lily came back carrying two cups of coffee. “Damn. My hands are full. Would you mind carrying my laptop?”

“Absolutely.”

They got comfortable on the sun loungers and she handed over a cup of the strong, dark brew.

As the two ladies sat and sipped, she chose a school from the list, filled out the application, and completed the form for the scholarship. She clicked send clapped her hands. “Well, I did it. I chose Brightport University and filled out everything online. I’ve also applied to a few colleges here on the west coast. We should hear back sometime soon.”

“That’s wonderful. Now, we can relax and take in the view for a while.”

The two women reclined, and Markaza’s thoughts drifted to Shelia. That poor girl. She’s in danger and doesn’t even realize it. A shiver ran up Markaza’s spine.

Lily seemed to notice the movement. “What was that for? Your nightmare was that bad?”

“You have no idea, honey. I can’t even talk about what I saw; it was that horrifying.”

Her eyes softened, and she nodded. “I understand.”

Markaza snorted and leveled her gaze on her friend. “No, you don’t, and I hope you never do.” After staring at her for a few minutes, hoping she understood but not wanting to elaborate for fear of the images returning, Markaza broke away and tipped her head back. “It’s time for your home therapy.”

Lily blanched. “Home therapy? What do you mean?”

“We’re gonna work on your self-image. Let’s go.”

They went inside.

Two hours later, she announced she’d had enough.

Markaza’s idea of working on self-image included standing Lily naked in front of her full-length mirrors and making her point out everything that was beautiful about herself. At first, all she could say was she had a nice figure. By the time they were an hour in, she was pointing out even tiny freckles that looked nice.

She suggested they go see her stylist because her hair was a suckfest.

It was impressive, and pride swelled in Markaza’s chest. “Does this mean you’re going out in public?”

“Yes. I need to get my hair evened out and maybe a new style. It’s time.”

Markaza nodded her approval and the two set off for the salon.

When they walked through the doors, a stylist that seemed to know Lily pounced on them. He gushed over her and exclaimed what a travesty her hair was. Never once did he mention the scars or even let on that he noticed them. She appeared to be having a blast as she ordered the works for her and Markaza.

Four hours later, the girls emerged from the salon with fresh mani-pedis, haircuts, and wax jobs.

The bright blue streaks in Markaza’s hair were changed to purple, and she was feeling like the teenager she was. She drove home with the music blaring and the top down, but she made sure to stay under the speed limit. There was no reason to incite panic unnecessarily.

Lily giggled the whole way, looking very chic with her new, choppy bob, not freaking out once about the fact that she was in a car.
