Chapter IX

She awoke to find sunlight in the room. She sat up, acutely uneasy. Something she had neglected to do, something urgent, something needful … She looked at the table. Bare. No bottles, no glasses. She rubbed her forehead, ran her fingers through her hair. She listened. Silence.

She got to her feet, looked into the bedroom. No Robert. Mildly puzzled she continued on through the bathroom, washed her face, rinsed her mouth, combed her hair. Then she went into the kitchen, found the coffee-pot, set it on the stove.

A few minutes later Robert came in, with a bag of groceries. He looked a trifle wan, but Lulu noted that he was freshly shaven.

She unpacked the bag: bacon, eggs, grapefruit, fresh doughnuts. “Robert,” said Lulu, “you’re a poet. Only someone intensely aware and sensitive could make such an effective entrance.”

“I knew you’d be hungry,” said Robert.

“But I’m a terrible cook.”
