Chapter Twenty-Six

At lunch, the dining hall felt airier without Hiker there. Ainsley informed them that he’d requested to take his meal in his study. She said he was inventing new swear words and trying to figure out how to operate the Kindle so he could find his books. Apparently, he’d pleaded with the Castle to put his office back the way it was, but currently, it wasn’t complying, for whatever reason.

“If he’d just let me help, I could teach him how to use the Kindle,” Sophia told Lunis as they strode toward the Cave, where Mahkah said the afternoon training would be held.

“I don’t think he wants to learn,” he stated.

“I don’t think he wants me here,” she added.

“Well, do you want to be here?” he asked her.

“Of course,” she stated, not even needing to think about it. “And this isn’t just about me. Do you want to be here?”

“Yes, as long as you understand that progress might look a lot like disappointment.”

She narrowed her eyes. “What does that mean?”

“It means that things don’t always go the way we think they will, but that doesn’t mean they’re not progressing.”

“Oh, the riddle talk,” Sophia sang.

A burst of movement flashed in her peripheral vision overhead. She halted, shielding her eyes as a tangle of purple and white rolled through the sky. It took a moment for her to realize that the ball of movement was two dragons wrestling in midair. Claws scratched and teeth ripped, the dragons filling the air with ferocious roars.

Coral, Evan’s dragon, and Wilder’s Simi split apart, staring at each other with heated gazes as they hovered at about the height of a two-story building.

The purple dragon shot a neat stream of fire at the white one, making Simi dart to the side to narrowly avoid the attack. She dove forward at once, wrapping her long neck around the other dragon’s, tying her up like a ball. The pair plummeted to the ground, making it quake when they hit and then rolling one on top of one another.

They split apart again once they stopped rolling, leveling their gazes at each other as they sidestepped. Simi’s white wings were held up beside her body, whereas Coral’s were pinned to her body.

“Why are they doing that?” Sophia asked. “Dragons don’t have to fight each other, do they?”

“We have, and I suspect we will again,” Lunis answered. “But they are doing this because they are bored and have no other way of getting out their aggression.”

“Yes, that makes sense,” Sophia said, noticing Bell, Hikers’ dragon, and Tala, Mahkah’s, watching from a distance. “Several hundred years of no missions would make anyone crazy.”

“Dragons who don’t have riders are content without a mission,” he explained. “However, once we elect to form a bond with a rider, we also subscribe to your world of productivity, purpose, and justice.”

“She hurt her!” Evan yelled, rushing to Coral, who had a bloody gash on her neck.

Quiet was on his heels, as was Hiker.

The purple dragon hissed, unfolding her wings and holding them out to keep the others away from her.
