Chapter Thirty-Nine

The perfect temperature and clean air were a welcomed relief after the heat and smoke on the island where they’d been. However, it all seemed like a sick joke after going from one extreme to the next.

“What did you find?” Paris crawled over to where Faraday lay a few yards away, noticing that the rodent’s chest was rising and falling, indicating that he was alive, to her relief.

He looked at her sideways as if he was waking from a nap. “Oh, it’s not good…not good at all, Pare.”

“Well, you not telling me straight away isn’t good for you, so tell me now.” She stretched to a standing position and watched as the squirrel did the same.

“At first, I couldn’t figure it out when I was reviewing the notes,” he began. “The molecular data didn’t match with what the—”

“I will turn you into jerky,” Paris interrupted. “I have a restaurant opening in a few hours, my hair is full of soot, and I’m pretty certain that place ruined my favorite boots. Tell me what you learned and now, or you’ll be on the menu at Little Pleasures.”

“The Knees have figured out how to fuse into one person,” he said in a mad rush.

“Wow, that’s super bizarre.” Paris was shocked. “I mean, I knew they were crazy, but that’s one weird act of desperation. Why would they do that?”

“I’m guessing they realized that the only way to beat you, who they must believe is their main enemy and obstacle, is to become your shadow-self. So they’ve fused themselves, but they did it to become one. They used their parts to be like your parts, which is majority fairy, part-magician, and demon blood to create a truly formidable force.”

Paris halted, swallowed, and assimilated the information. Then she turned to the squirrel and squatted to face him with a serious expression. “Did they succeed? This is very, very important. Did they create a replica of me?”

He bit his lip, put his paws in his mouth for a moment, yanked them out again, and looked to the side. “I’m afraid they did. There's a very dark version of you out there. Something that’s part-fairy and part-magician with demon blood.”

Paris threw her head back and laughed, realizing that Faraday was extremely confused but that things were finally going her way.

Her enemies might be helping her out for once.
