DOUBLE OVERHAND LOOP

Purpose

This makes a strong fixed loop for thinner stuff but not for rope (as it jams).

Tying

Form a long bight and tie an overhand knot in the doubled end of the line, then take an extra tuck (figure 1). Coax the knot into shape, tightening it a bit at a time, taking care to arrange each turn so that it will lie snugly without parallel tracks (figure 2) and only then tension and tighten it (figure 3).

SECTION 2

FIGURE OF EIGHT KNOTS

When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the USA, 1933–45)
