Twenty-Six

“I am going to sit down,” I said. “But I don’t think you’re using that term correctly. Don’t feel bad; Shannon’s not great at this kind of stuff either. YOLO is an acronym for You Only Live Once. You’re probably looking for something like ‘cray cray’ or ‘lit up in here’.”

Both Shannon and Mrs. Grundy looked at me as if I had grown an extra head.

“Okay,” I said, taking my seat on the couch. “I’m going to shut up now and just enjoy this nightmarish story time my life has become.”

“I did call you and tip you off about Evan Woods living in Haven Apartments,” Mrs. Grundy stated. “I’ve been watching your growth as a hunter of the supernatural. Both myself and the Court approve of your actions hunting and slaying the supernatural that are getting out of order. One of the main reasons Watchers exist, such as myself, is to keep the worlds of the human and supernatural separate.”

“Did you even get to know Evan before you ordered his death?” I challenged, sticking up for my friend. “Listen, I’m not saying the man’s an angel, but he’s doing the best he can with the hand he’s been dealt. Did you ever think about that?”

I didn’t mean to raise my voice at the old woman, but the last part came off as a shout.

Warden growled at me, lifting the top of his lips to show off an impressive arsenal of sharp pointed teeth.

“He’s still a friend.” Mrs. Grundy reached down to stroke the back of the dog’s ears. “He’s a loyal friend. Our world is in short supply of those these days.”

Warden settled down, placing his head between his paws, although he never took his eyes off me.

“I am woman enough to admit I was wrong about Evan,” Mrs. Grundy answered. “However, he was only part of the reason it was important for Shannon to come to Haven. The other part was for you two to meet. In the history of our order, hunters never hunt alone.”

“So there are other people out there doing what I do?” Shannon asked incredulously. “I mean, other people staking vampires and chopping off heads?”

“Far too few, I’m afraid,” Mrs. Grundy admitted. “Most hunters don’t make it past their first hunt much less years into the profession.”

I could feel a migraine coming on. Hunters, the Court, hellhounds; it was all enough to make me want to go back to my gallon of ice cream and chocolate icing.

“Listen, I’d love to be part of this Court you have going on and own a hellhound and all of this, but I’m just picking up the pieces of a life that’s been shattered,” I told both women. “So just unsubscribe me from all of this, okay? I need some time to think about it all and—”

“What about Mr. Bloodstone, at least?” Shannon asked. “What about all that talk that I wasn’t alone anymore?”

“You’re not,” I told her. “I’m not letting you go alone, but that’s as far as I’m committing right now.
