Chapter 7: Beneath the Waves

The morning after their narrow escape, Carter and Mia sat in Naomi’s garage, staring at the metallic disc they’d recovered from Black Reef Island. Naomi adjusted her glasses, studying the carvings under the bright LED lamp on her workbench.

“This is incredible,” Naomi said, running her finger over the markings. “It’s not just decorative—it’s a key.”

“A key to what?” Carter asked, leaning closer.

Naomi tapped on her laptop, pulling up a digital rendering of the engine blueprints they’d stolen from Rhodes. “Look at this.” She pointed to a circular slot in the center of the diagram. “The disc fits here. If the engine is assembled, this would activate it.”

Mia frowned. “Activate it for what?”

“That’s the million-dollar question,” Naomi replied. “But whatever it does, Rhodes is obsessed with finishing it.”

Carter groaned. “Great. So now we’re in possession of something that she’ll stop at nothing to get.”

“Exactly,” Mia said, standing. “Which is why we need to find out what’s at the bottom of that whirlpool before Rhodes does.”

Carter sighed, rubbing his temples. “Let me guess—we’re going diving?”

By midday, the siblings were on the Sea Sprite, heading toward the coordinates Naomi had triangulated for the center of the whirlpool. The storm had passed, leaving the waters calmer, but the memory of the glowing vortex still made Carter’s stomach churn.

“This is a bad idea,” Carter said as he secured the oxygen tanks.

“It’s a great idea,” Mia replied, strapping on her gear. “We’re taking the fight to Rhodes for once.”

Carter shook his head but didn’t argue.

Naomi’s voice crackled through the boat’s radio. “I’m monitoring your dive from here. Be careful—the sonar is picking up unusual readings near the site.”

“Unusual how?” Carter asked.

“Like something big is down there,” Naomi said.

Carter gave Mia a pointed look. “Still a great idea?”

Mia grinned. “Let’s find out.”

The water was cold and dark as they descended, their flashlights cutting through the gloom. Strange shapes loomed in the distance—jagged rocks, tangled shipwrecks, and pieces of debris that had been sucked into the vortex.

“There,” Mia said, pointing ahead.

At the bottom of the whirlpool was a massive metal structure, half-buried in the sand. Its surface was covered in the same glowing carvings they’d seen on the engine in the cave.

“That’s part of the Silver Phantom,” Carter said, his voice muffled through the communicator.

Mia swam closer, her light illuminating a large circular slot in the center of the structure. She reached into her bag, pulling out the metallic disc.

“This has to be it,” she said, aligning the disc with the slot.

“Mia, wait,” Carter said. “We don’t know what it’ll do.”

Mia hesitated, her hand hovering over the disc. “If we don’t activate it, Rhodes will. Do you trust her more than us?”

Carter groaned. “Fine. Just do it quickly.”

The moment the disc clicked into place, the carvings on the structure lit up in a dazzling green glow. The water around them pulsed with energy, and a deep rumble vibrated through the ocean floor.

“What’s happening?” Carter asked, his voice shaking.

“I don’t know,” Mia admitted.
