The chroniclers of “Letopisets nachala tsarstva” and “Tsarstvennaia kniga” thus offered a third option for reconciling the profundity of Orthodox ideology with the reality of Muslims functioning in influential roles in Muscovy. They portrayed Shah Ali as absolutely contrite, dependent, and subservient in relation to the grand prince. They thus articulated the characteristics and qualities that would make a Muslim Tatar acceptable or tolerable in Muscovy. A Muslim Tatar would have to be, like Shah Ali, loyal, obedient, and subservient.29
