I told Sam to slow down (if she’d been driving the speed limit, I wouldn’t have had to) as we approached the field where I’d left my car. There was only one car in the clearing other than mine, and it didn’t look familiar, so I gave Sam the go-ahead. Her truck rumbled across the lumpy grass to park next to my rental.

I got out and rummaged in the pocket of my board shorts for the valet key. With nothing else in hand, I felt like I was forgetting something, but I had been traveling pretty light lately, even for me. Sam got out too, watching as I opened my trunk. She looked almost as wary as I was, brows furrowed and arms across her modest chest.

“Listen,” she said, “if it came down to it, I would do anything for JD, so long as it didn’t hurt Danny. But don’t you get sucked into his shit. He’s always been a cocky sonofabitch, and I’m afraid that’s finally coming home to roost.”

I thought of what Danny had said, and smiled. “You’re not the only one.”

I pulled out my purse and threw it in the passenger seat of the car. I’d deal with everything else later. Whenever that was. That’s the great thing about later.

Sam followed me, and moved to stand in the space of the open driver’s door. Very close. I’d never noticed before that Sam was a few inches taller than me.

“Thanks—” I began, but soon I’d forgotten what I was about to thank her for. Because she was kissing me.

My hair was still up, so she couldn’t shove her hands in it, but she grabbed the back of my head with both hands and pulled me into her. I mean, she didn’t give me whiplash or anything. It was just that suddenly my face was in her face, and her mouth was on mine. It was … disconcerting? I didn’t fully experience the … experience, because Mrs. Bibbystock was loudly trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Mrs. B is an elderly schoolmarm who lives in the back of my head, usually sitting in a rocking chair, but this was unusual enough for her to stand up and take notice. I think she was waiting to see if there would be tongue. There wasn’t.

Once Sam was done (I can’t say I was doing much of anything to hold up my end), she embraced me and leaned her head next to mine.

“There are eyes everywhere,” she said. “Better that anyone watching thinks you’ve been parking here for the same reason everyone else does.”

She leaned back out of my space and took one hand in hers.

“Uh-huh,” I said, in the same tone of voice I would have used to say, sure, they did that moon landing thing with a green screen.

“When I pulled in, I noticed a Town Car across the road with a big guy sitting in it,” she said. “Could be a coincidence, but he hasn’t moved since we arrived.
