On my way into the precinct, I passed Captain Casey Norton leaving. He looked even unfriendlier than usual. âWhatâs going on?â I said.
âIâm off the task force for now,â he told me.
âWhat? Why?â
âThree of the four girls are from Baltimore.â
âAnd the fourth one isnât,â I said even though he didnât need the reminder. âBesides, I canât imagine the BPD wouldnât want the stateâs resources and help.â
âItâs not them,â he said. âWe all answer to somebody, and thereâs a major who wants me on the Frederick girl. Iâll still be tangentially working on the same thing.â
I frowned. Politics ruined everything, especially kidnapping and homicide investigations. âYouâll keep us in the loop?â I asked.
âUs?â He smirked. âYouâre official now?â
âStick around. Iâll help you add a few more commendations to your trophy wall.â
âIâd need a trophy wall first,â he said. âBut if Iâm ever running short on awards, Iâll be sure to call you.â He chuckled as he walked to his car. I headed into the precinct to find neither Rich nor King anywhere.
âTheyâre both out,â a uniformed officer told me as she passed me.
âThanks,â I said. I went searching for Leon Sharpe, finding him in an office around the corner. âNew digs?â
He looked up from his paperwork. âTemporary. Keeps me closer to the action.â
âYou send Rich and King out?â
âYep,â he said. âTheyâre working the Graham disappearance.â
I frowned. âWhy is her case the priority?â
âIf theyâre all related like we think, focusing on one doesnât make a ton of sense.â He held up a hand to cut off my objection. It worked for now. âI know the Swain girlâs on the clock. You still at a dead end there?â
âMore or less,â I said. âNothing I try to connect sticks.â
âWe all have cases like this.â
âNot me.â
Sharpe flashed a patient smile. âYouâve done the task force bit before with the pedo ring. Iâm sure you can find something to do.â
His comment planted an idea in my mind. It might be the last thing I had time to do for Ashleigh. âIâm sure I can,â I said.
