As Hiro narrowed his eyes, a guard on horseback came cantering up from the walls.

“I am pleased to see you have safely arrived, Your Highness. However, continuing any further would endanger your royal person. If you might make your way around to the western gate?”

“All right. But tell me, what are they shouting about?”

“Word of House Krone’s atrocities in Faerzen has spread among the citizenry, but sadly rumors breed rumors. Protests have sprung up, spreading the baseless tale that the Valditte and the Warmaiden were framed.”

“I see. Thank you. We’ll do as you suggested.”

“Thank you, Your Highness. I apologize for the trouble.” The guard turned his horse about and rode back toward the uproar.

Once the man was out of sight, Hiro closed the window and turned to the rest of the carriage’s occupants. “It looks like Rosa has done her job well.”

“Maybe too well.” Liz looked pale. “The city’s one bad day away from a riot.”

Hiro was unconcerned. “It might seem that way, but I’ve got a hunch that these protests will die down before violence breaks out.”

To what degree would depend on the harshness of Liz’s and Aura’s sentences, but the threat of violence would certainly have lessened their punishments. Rosa had done good work. As the crown jewel of the empire, the capital saw a constant flow of travel from foreign nations—civil unrest would be nationally humiliating. The emperor would have no choice.

“With the people on our side, we’ll be all right as long as you can make a good case for yourselves. That’s the hard part now.”

Liz nodded meekly. “I’ll do my best.” She projected no hesitation. The last time they were there, she had seemed pained by the prospect of entering the palace, but now she radiated calmness and composure. There was nothing so terrifying as someone who had found their resolve. Soon the nobles would discover that they had taken a lion cub for a kitten, and Hiro looked forward to seeing the astonishment on their faces when they realized their mistake.

“We have arrived at House Kelheit’s mansion, Your Highness,” came the coachman’s voice as the carriage eased to a stop.

Hiro cast one last look at the other three occupants and placed a hand on the door. “First of all, we’ll have to celebrate our reunion with Rosa. I’m sure she can’t wait to see us.”

He opened the door to see an ample bosom flying towards him. He had time for one choked cry before everything went dark. Rosa’s greetings had not gotten any less enthusiastic with time.

A smooth, husky voice issued from above him. “Thank the Divines you’re safe! I feared I’d never see you again!”

Hiro smiled weakly. “It’s good to see you too. I’m glad you’re well.” He prised himself away from the warmth of her embrace—noting a pleasantly sweet scent as he retracted—and looked at her properly for the first time.

She chuckled. “You’ve been in good health, I hope. Have you been eating well?”

Myste Caliara Rosa von Kelheit was the present acting head of House Kelheit, one of the empire’s five great houses.
