Chapter Fifteen

My love has gone into the mountains. My days are empty now, like the dregs in my coffee cup. Do they hide my destiny, or is my destiny as dark as the burned ash?

Merita’s diary, 22 August 2000

Kit had finished her morning workout in the home gym she had set up in her apartment. It was nothing fancy, but it had all the essential elements—free weights, a stationary bike, and a yoga mat. When her mobile announced the arrival of the message, it was from Matt and typically brief. Meet you at the White and Black Cafe 8.45 a.m. need to debrief—Matt.

Kit took a shower, slipped into her tailored, blue linen dress and comfortable walking sandals, grabbed her briefcase, and headed downtown. She pulled her auburn hair back and knotted it into a bun. When possible, she preferred to walk to work. It was a warm, balmy day in late autumn, and there was still a shimmer of heat over the roads. Kit paid careful attention as she walked to avoid twisting her ankle on the irregular surface and potholes on the pavements. There was plenty of traffic, but when she crossed the road, the cars generally slowed or stopped for her.

She arrived to find Matt sitting away from the tables and chairs that had been set out on the pavement. He was one of the few people sitting inside the cafe, close to the window. She was surprised to see him smoking for the first time. When he saw her, he signaled to the waiter. He knew she’d want an Americano. She added to the order with a freshly baked croissant, which were excellent at the White and Black Cafe.

While Matt sometimes looked rough around the edges, today he seemed even more fraught. It looked as if he hadn’t shaved, and his eyes were bleary.

“Good morning,” Kit said.

“Thanks for coming. Take a seat. I wanted to brief you before we meet at the office. And I wanted to ask how you are. I didn’t think Raco would come after you personally.”

“Nor did I,” Kit said and shuddered. “I’m okay, but I have a few bruises from jumping out the car.”

“That was probably a smart move. The bastard got away yet again. He had already disappeared by the time we alerted the police. We’re still trying to reconstruct his movements. The taxi driver has been helpful. Fortunately Raco didn’t attack him. Until we catch him, it’s probably better that you don’t travel alone for a while. What were you doing in the Shari Mountains?”

Kit looked down, pulled a flake of pastry off her croissant, and spread a layer of raspberry jam on it. “I thought I’d go to Prizren for the day. I caught a taxi.” She looked at him. “It seemed like a nice day for it.” She hoped the taxi driver wouldn’t mention that Sergei had ordered the taxi. She felt protective of people knowing about her private life; she knew they wouldn’t approve of her spending time with a Russian.
