The compound was empty, and they didn’t find any booby traps or IEDs, which suggested to Matt that the place had been abandoned in a hurry. Quite possibly on the day that the US Air Force had initiated their shock and awe campaign.

The entrance door of the first house, a big oak piece, was locked, but was quickly opened with some C-4. Then they officially started their mission, which was to go through the building with a fine-toothed comb. There were four buildings in total, and it took them several hours to go through it all.

Sanchez, Johnson, Crosby and Matt were given the task of searching the building closest to the lake, a ten bedroom, two level hacienda-like structure. It was located about a hundred and fifty yards away from the main building, and slightly more to the southeast.

“Not bad at all,” Crosby said to Matt after they had spent an hour and a half going through the various rooms. They had just parked themselves in some very comfortable deck chairs on the massive balcony overlooking the lake.

Matt nodded and took a sip of the bottle of beer he’d found in the fridge.

“Yeah, I could definitely get used to this,” he replied. “And for once, the view is actually acceptable.”

Crosby placed his M-16 on the table next to the six pack of San Miguel that Matt had positioned there, and expertly fished out one of the bottles from the pack. Then he got his knife out, popped the cap and downed half of the beer in one go.

“Hopefully we get to spend the night here, I wouldn’t mind going for a swim. This heat is really killing me, man.” He let out a big burp, lifted the bottle and took a few more mouthfuls.

“I don’t see why not,” Matt replied. “It’s going to take a while to do a complete search of all the buildings. Just the amount of paperwork and documents in this house alone will take a few hours to move. And my guess is that there’s probably a whole lot more in the main building. They’ll have to send some trucks from Tikrit if they want to take possession of all of it. And I’m sure we’ll get to babysit this place until they arrive.”

Crosby nodded and gazed out over the lake. Then he downed the rest of his beer and grabbed another bottle from the pack.

“I wonder when we’ll find the old guy,” he said. “There can’t be that many places left for him to hide. He knows that his palaces are off limits, so the only places available to him are ordinary houses. But if he tries to hide in one of those, the locals are likely to contact us. For some reason, I don’t think he’s the most popular person in the country at the moment.”

“He might have fled already. That’s what I would have done. The regime in Syria was on friendly terms with him. I don’t think they would have turned him away at the border.
