In the Free State and South African (Transvaal) Republics, Afrikaners controlled the state. Attack from outside, such as the British annexation of the Transvaal in 1877 and the rebellion of 1881 which ousted them, mobilized support for the Republican cause by using Afrikaner symbols. But the commercialization of agriculture produced marked class divisions amongst Afrikaners in the north, and by the end of the nineteenth century poor bywoners had little in common with the wealthy farmers and commercial groups who controlled government (Giliomee 1989). During the South African War support for Afrikaner nationalism grew, especially in the Boer commandos, but this was not universal (Pretorius 2002). In particular, some bywoners and poor white tenants had refused to join commandos led by the large landowners, and some even joined the British.
