Clarice and Ida had just smoked a fatty. Both of them squinted against the sunlight when Jaclyn opened Clarice’s door without knocking. She fanned at the smoke with a look of disgust. “You know,” she began with a hand on her hip, “when you doped up my folks Christmas before last, it was kind of amusing and somewhat of a blessing. Betsy tolerates your weed use, but she’s always made it plain that she did not want to participate. So did she flip her wig and blow a doobie with y’all, or did you slip her a mickey?”

“I’ve never understood that phrase,” Clarice said, looking to Ida for wisdom. “Why is it called that?”

Ida shrugged. “Who’s Mickey?”

“Did you spike her tea or coffee?” Jaclyn asked impatiently.

“She’s been moody and sad lately. She needed something better than what the doctor was giving her, something natural—”

“Clarice, I’ve heard the speech all my life. Everything we need is found in nature, and man is messing us up with their creations. To some extent, I’m inclined to agree with you, but this boils down to consent.”

“She’s rhyming, too,” Ida said with a smile.

Jaclyn ignored her and kept her focus on Clarice because of the two of them, she still seemed to have some of her mental faculties. Ida seemed enthralled with her coffee cup. “If Betsy would’ve made the choice to smoke with y’all, that would’ve been on her, but this, Clarice, is on you. Did you stop to consider that she could’ve been hit by a car or in her impaired state done something to hurt herself or someone else?” Clarice jutted her chin in defiance, but Jaclyn didn’t back down or flinch, then Clarice began to look like a scolded child as she dropped her gaze. “Give me your word that you won’t do this again,” Jaclyn said calmly.

“You have it,” Clarice said lowly.

“Can we just take this a step further and agree here that you won’t fry anyone else’s egg without their permission?”

“Eggs,” Ida said, drawing out the word as she stared at Poe, who cleaned himself atop the microwave. “Check that chicken and see if it’s got any.”

“Ida…that’s a cat.” Jaclyn stared at the pair. “Are either of you going to remember the conversation we just had?”

Clarice nodded. “Cats don’t lay eggs.”
