Chapter Thirty

Paris threw up her hand, ready to throw a combat spell at the fireball to defend Willow. Thankfully she didn’t have to because the fairy godmother used a simple, tried-and-true technique. The headmistress dropped to her front, her face and everything else planting straight into the cemetery's mud.

The fireball soared over her head and hit another tombstone, exploding a safe distance away.

Letting out a breath, Paris watched as Willow crawled to safety behind another stone, her face and front covered in thick, dark mud. This was exactly why fairy godmothers weren’t cut out for battle. They didn’t have the instinct or knowledge to defend themselves. They didn’t know how to go on the offensive, which was Paris’ next goal.

She turned her attention back to where the two evil fairies were stationed somewhere on the other side of the cemetery. Pulling in a deep breath, Paris prepared herself for another attempt at creating a fireball. She knew she couldn’t overthink it. Desire was the biggest part of a spell. Know-how usually came later.

Using the motivation in her chest, Paris peeked out briefly from behind her shield and pointed her finger at the angel tombstone where she could make out a part of a figure.

Something shot from her finger this time. Unfortunately, what it was wouldn’t light dry kindling on fire. A single spark shot through the air, but the wind immediately extinguished it.

“Oh, and they think you’re so great, halfling,” Courtney Montgomery’s voice issued from her place standing on top of the mausoleum to the far left. She stood on the roof, her hands on her hips and her pigtails blowing in the wind. Like the first time that Paris had the unfortunate experience of meeting Becky’s sister, she was wearing the awful black tutu like she was some gothic ballerina.

Paris also remembered from her prior encounter with Courtney that she liked to talk a big game and was easy to goad. That was a key strategy for taking down opponents in Paris’ book. Get them riled up, and they wouldn’t know what hit them when attacked. Literally and figuratively.

“You can’t shoot a fireball,” Courtney continued from her place up high.

“What can you do with your broken wand?” Paris yelled, putting herself squarely behind the tombstone as she heard footsteps to the right. The other fairy was on the move.

“Shut your mouth!” Courtney exclaimed.

“Okay, then we won’t talk about how your mother cut you off from your family money,” Paris taunted.

“You will pay for exposing me!”

“We’ll see, Miss Wand-Less.”

Paris ran through her other combat options. Wind was her best bet as a half-magician since that was the element they controlled. She could use it to knock Courtney to the ground, but that might break a bone or two. She reasoned that Courtney wasn’t the threat. She was an annoyance. Paris needed to keep her attention on the one sending fireballs.

The sound of footsteps paused.

Paris peeked over her shield. Her evil compass told her that the fairy was a little closer and hiding behind a narrow tree trunk.
