Synopsis

Impish man-child Pee-wee Herman invites viewers to visit his madcap playhouse where anything can happen.

Production History

Comedian Paul Reubens created the Pee-wee Herman character in 1978 while a member of the famed Los Angeles improv group the Groundlings.19 A few years later, Reubens launched The Pee-wee Herman Show,20 a live stage show that eventually gained the attention of executives at HBO,21 who in 1981 agreed to air a recording of the show’s final performance.22 Reubens then toured the country as his alter ego until 1985, at which point Warner Bros. approached him about headlining a Pee-wee Herman movie called Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.23 Michael Chase Walker, director of children’s programming for CBS, saw an advanced screening of the film and decided to build a Saturday morning children’s show around the character. Reubens initially declined because he wanted to focus on his film career,24 but Walker eventually convinced the comic to set his sights on TV stardom instead.25 In January 1986, Reubens agreed to appear in the show26 but he wanted to change it from animation to live action.27 The network gave him the freedom to express his vision however he wanted, and both parties committed to a September 1986 release.28
