THEY BURIED THEM THAT SAME AFTERNOON in the small cemetery at Santa Gertrudis. She in a black box, made in a rush and with cheap wood. He in the gray casket with silver molding that he had kept hidden since that time when he was unable to use it to hold his mother’s remains.

Only two individuals accompanied the bodies to the graveyard. Secundino Colmenero and Bernarda Pinzón. Not one of the many guests that had stayed so often at Santa Gertrudis showed up, and those who had been there cleared out without taking their leave, as if they were afraid of becoming accomplices in that double passing. Even the gravediggers, after finishing their handiwork, disappeared in different directions.

When the two were alone, facing the twin crosses they had driven over the same grave, Secundino Colmenero asked:

—What’s gonna become of you now, Bernarda?

She, wearing a sad face, contrite, as if she bore not only the weight of those two deaths, but also that of her own guilt, shrugged her shoulders and, in a voice that was full of bitterness, said:

—There’s no way I could live here... I’ll follow my mother’s destiny. That’s how I can honor her wishes.
