LIFE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Believe it or not, the majority of your time at college will not be spent in a classroom. With classes averaging twenty hours per week, you are looking at 100 hours of non-classroom related time on your hands. Of course, a huge chunk of that time will be spent studying (and some of it might even be needed for a few hours of sleep). But, if you start adding in time for eating and hanging out with friends, you could end up having one seriously tight schedule. It’s easy to get caught up in all the work, so make sure to flesh out your schedule with extracurricular activities you truly enjoy. Every college offers plenty of activities to choose from, from clubs, teams, parties, and volunteer activities to lectures, movies, concerts, performances, and late night dorm bull sessions. In fact, even if your social life is thriving, it’s not a bad idea to make yourself check out at least one or two activities that you’ve never tried before. It couldn’t hurt and it’ll probably be free or cheap. The key to successfully engaging in extracurricular activities at college is balance. Students should be mindful of their course load and any part-time or full-time work obligations before joining groups on campus. Read on for tips on how you can maximize your time and still find ways to participate in non-academic activities that will make life outside of the classroom a truly fun and fulfilling experience.
