Seeing Duncan at Rashad’s shop three days after we spent his heat together was the shock of my life. I was, as I heard Larkin say a few times, shooketh. Seeing him making my niece and nephew smile made my heart swell. Watching him go from crouching to standing at his full height, well, that made something else swell. It was too much, too overwhelming. I was never a fan of feelings. They were always too much, even the good ones. Duncan made me feel too much, even if it was good.

I didn’t have to ride home with Rashad, but I couldn’t avoid him once we were there. He trapped me in the living room by getting the kids to come to me while I was at my desk. He knew I couldn’t resist them.

“Oh yeah, you definitely got yourself an admirer.”

“Don’t,” I said, an edge to my voice. I had to watch it, because Rashad was still my lead alpha’s omega, but he only took it in stride and shrugged.

“Just saying, brother-in-law. I’ve only known him for three days and I think he’s pretty cool. I can see the attraction with the height thing.”

I buried my face in my hands and moaned, “Please, can we not do this.” Duncan’s height did it for me, maybe a little too well. All I could think about was getting him in bed, letting my dominant side out on the bigger man.

“What’s the matter? Having a crush isn’t a bad thing, Jor.” I didn’t say anything, just used my thumb to rub at one eye and my pointer finger on the other. Rashad nodded slowly. “Ahhh. If maybe it’s more than a crush, that isn’t a bad thing, Jor.”

“Listen, I only know Duncan from around, okay?” Yeah, right. I could barely say that with a straight face the way my instincts screamed at me to go to him. Ever more so now, and I didn’t know if it was the distance, or if something had changed with him or what, but it was killing me to be away from my omega like this.

“Around where?”

“Around the town of Seven Corners. He’s an alright guy and I like him as an acquaintance. Is that what you wanted to hear?”

Rashad clearly wanted to laugh. “Sure, sure.” So much skepticism and teasing in those two words. My face was burning hot. Death, please come for me. Anything’s better than this.

I dropped my fingers back on the keyboard and let them clack away, entering in all the data on our territory fee collections for the month, because some of the older folks still paid with cash and checks. One of the pups yipped their way to my feet, going full speed, which wasn’t very fast on their chubby little legs, and plowed into my calf. They bounced off onto their furry butt, yipping then shifting. It was nova, her curls springing all over the place, and her pudgy hands clapping with delight like I was some kind of amusement park ride.
