Hardening Off

A vital step to seed starting happens in the transition between the controlled environment where you started your seeds (indoors or in a greenhouse) to the garden where they will be transplanted. If you were to move your plants directly out to the garden from indoors, they would scorch under the strength of the sun. They must be allowed to acclimate to sunlight by being introduced to it in small increments of time. This is called “hardening off.” Properly hardened plants will have darker green leaves that are a little thicker and tougher. Transplanting without first hardening off can destroy plants.
