Flynn

“You could have warned me.” I spoke to the man standing in the shadows of my office.

I didn’t like seeing Camille so sad. It killed any kind of happiness I’d felt from her finally accepting the mate bond.

I had a plan though. I wasn’t leaving it in anyone else’s hands this time.

“What do you mean?” He took a step closer with a scowl.

“Bethany screamed at Camille because she told her she was immortal.”

Mathis flinched. “She was a mess when I found her, Flynn. She fought me the entire time I tried to get her back to the apartment and that was after I had to fight a den of fucking vampires for her.”

“Don’t fucking call them that. They are genetically mutated Blood Fae.” I growled.

They were still my people, and I hated the word vampire. That was not what we were. Humans frequently got shit like that wrong.

“Fine, an entire den of our human cousins. Better?” He shook his head and sat in the chair across from my desk. “She was tortured by them, Flynn, and that was right outside where her parents’ home used to sit. She was taken from the charred remains of her family’s home to be tortured and fed from like their own personal blood bag. She’s traumatized, but she will get over it eventually.”

“I hope you’re right. Camille can’t take another loss. She already lost her freedom because of the Council fucks. Now, her world is exploding, and her friend said she hates her. I don’t think she can handle anything else.”

“I’ll keep an eye on Beth to make sure she’s safe in the meantime.” He nodded like I had just asked him to do something I hadn’t.

“Thank you.” I didn’t say it often; I expected others to do things without question.

Was Camille rubbing off on me? She better not have been, because I couldn’t afford weakness.

Mathis nodded before melting into the shadows again.

Good, I had plans to make and a dinner to schedule. The date wouldn’t be as elaborate as the one I’d planned before, but I hoped it would make her forget for even just a while.
