Lost Line

If you lose the guideline, you should immediately stop and assess your environment. Look for silt, ceiling bubbles and the lights of the remaining dive team. After shielding your light against your chest, slowly sweep the beam around the cave corridor in the hopes of signaling teammates. The next step is to make a secure tie off with a safety reel and travel in the direction that seems obvious. If visibility has been lost, then you should begin to search low to the floor and continue until you reach a wall, while sweeping widely with an outstretched arm to find the guideline. Traveling up the wall, continue to unspool line until you detect that you are creating slack. Complete a circular sweep, slowly reeling in your line and hopefully snagging the main guideline in the process. Once back at the secure tie off, you can search in a different direction and continue your search until the guideline has been found.

Once you have recovered the main line, tie off your safety reel as you would a jump and place an arrow in the direction of your travel. Then work your way toward the exit. If you do not find your team upon exiting, review your gas supply and decide if re-entering the cave makes sense. Hopefully, your teammates will find your safety reel and arrow and know that you are moving toward the exit.
