CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Nearly two decades after a pair of hijacked airliners flew into New York’s Twin Towers, Washington remained hyperaware of terrorism and threats against public officials and their families. At midnight, a white van with Ted’s Cleaning Services written in flowing cursive across the side, parked three houses from Lana San Giovanni’s estate. Two FBI field agents sat inside the vehicle, a young female sweeping binoculars across the estate’s grounds while a grizzled male huffed and dealt the cards in an old school game of Solitaire. A tap existed on San Giovanni’s landline, and a secret service agent named Revert patrolled the downstairs. She’d refused the tap on the mobile phone, stating the number was private and only family used it. Agents vetted mail which arrived at the congresswoman’s office and home, and the agents inside the van recorded the license plate numbers of every vehicle passing the estate.

So it came as a shock when Lana San Giovanni uncovered an unmarked envelope among a stack of junk mail and correspondences. She threw the other letters aside on the bed and held the blank envelope in her trembling hand. Without opening the letter, she couldn’t know it came from God’s Hand, yet her instinct insisted he’d sent it. Her hand reached for the phone and stopped short. Until she read the note, she didn’t wish to alert Agent Revert, who’d done nothing to bring her daughter home. Better than a day had passed, and the so-called experts were no closer to rescuing Joelle.

She tore the top open and stared at the folded paper inside the envelope. The ghosts of typed words bled through, though it was impossible to discern their meaning without unfolding the paper. San Giovanni gripped the note as her eyes moved to the closed bedroom door, then to the curtained windows. Closing her eyes, the congresswoman pulled the letter from the envelope and unfolded the paper.
