In the name of settling what I could in my life, I went to see a colleague of Tom, the dick from the surgical boards, and agreed that if I retested off the record, my original score standing even if this score came in lower, completely to put rumors to rest, and not forever have every proctor going forward sit in my lap or doubt me and we could put the ugly matter to bed, I would. Plus, I would keep from interviewing with every medical publication how sexism was still abundant, and blah, blah, blah.

The deal was made, and this time I finished the test in fifty minutes, extra specially distracted and not worried either way because my score stayed the same as long as I proved to them I didn’t cheat. Yeah, Tom’s counterpart, a woman who sat five feet from me the whole time, burst out laughing as I watched her run the score card through the digital scanner. That had been part of the deal after Tom had been so adamantly on a witch hunt. I would be there when they graded it as well.

“I will handle this,” she finally assured me when she finished her laugh. “You don’t have to worry about any more flack or bullying from us.”

“Same result?”

“Yes, in less time on a different version, and with me hovering close enough to know you use a peppermint body wash, for god’s sake,” she drawled. “We should be doing articles on the rock star that burst out of medical school last year, the first female to blow all others away, and yet, you’re being accused of cheating. I will handle this, Dr. Murphy. I’ll also talk to the head of your program and assure him it’s over.”

“I didn’t tell him I was coming, and I don’t want articles, either,” I confessed, realizing I’d made a mistake maybe. She raised an eyebrow, and I sighed, realizing I couldn’t get out of there without doing some explaining, so I went with a short, human-only version.

She listened to me thoughtfully, bobbing her head and processing it once I was done. Then she opened her mouth and shut it a few times before finally deciding on what to say. “Go back. It’s a good program, and your director is obviously one of the good guys if he was fighting for you. I will say it’s not your mind that got you in this, Dr. Murphy, it’s your breasts, and if you gave up because some old timer thought women couldn’t do what you did, couldn’t hack it—wouldn’t you just prove his point if you quit?”

It was my turn to open and close my mouth a few times. Then I slowly nodded.

“I’m not saying it’s wrong to want a profession where being female doesn’t matter. I’m saying good luck finding such a profession. It might not be as apparent as the one we’re in, but you have the chance to change it with that beautiful brain of yours. Do it.
