"Who has a better right? This is my own land! My ovra cottage is on the shore beyond! I was returning to get a package for Molly Coppinger's bazaar when I saw these women trespassing on my property, and I naturally investigated, only to be pursued and tackled--"

"Girls," Ward said briskly , "did you tackle Fatty? Honestly? Girls, take a trip to Boston and buy yourselves some hats on me! Buyyourselves the best lunch in town. Do a matinee. Have a good time - you don't need to look at Asey! I mean it!"

All of you," Dudley pointed his linger at them, "are trespassing on my land! I demand -"

"You're certainly down on trespassers, aren't you?" Ward interrupted. "Turn the other cheek, Fatty. Forgive our trespasses - you know, I think the workout the girls gave you has done you a world of good. You've definitely lost a few ounces around the waistline. Or have you got on a girdle? Frankly, I think you ought to hire the girls to chase you three times a day for a month. The chances of your surviving after fifty would be enormously improved!"

Before Dudley French had a chance to open his mouth and spit out the words he had obviously been treasuring on his tonguetip, Asey spoke to him.

"French, have you seen or heard from Doc Cummings?"

"Cummings? Why?" Dudley retorted.

"Why in God's name should I see that old fool? I wouldn't trust him with a sick dog!"

"I suggest," Asey said, "that you get in touch with him quite soon. Now, girls, where'd you leave your car? You think you can find it without any trouble?"

"Well," Effie said hesitantly, "I parked it by a pine tree with branches that stuck out like this

She thrust her hands out at forty-degree angles.

"Uh-huh. I see," Asey said. "Like that. Huh. Maybe I better help you find it. Come on, an' -"

"I want an apology!" French said. "I demand an apology! I demand some rational explanation of this outrageous scene! Don't think you can get away with any such nonsense, Mayo, you and that fake hack! You and these women are tres -"

"I think," Asey said, " that the girls are too hot an' too tired to go into a lot of explanations just for the sake of your pride, French. They just mistook you for someone else, an' you know that's all there is to it."

"I have been attacked!" French said. "I have

"I don't think," Asey said, "that you been injured much. An' I know you're mistaken about us all trespassin' on your land. This wood lot here happens to belong to my cousin, Syl Mayo. You can see his markin's blazed on that stump yonder. If anyone's trespassin', French, you are."

"Do you," French demanded hotly, "expect me to overlook this outrage as if it

166didn't matter? To brush off this attack on me? To toss the whole outrageous scene aside as if it were a joke?"

Uh-huh," Asey said. "I expect you to see the wisdom of makin a funny story out of this before I do, with Ward's help.
