Fifteen

It was getting late. Almost everyone had left the office, and I was just finishing up some paperwork on the option we were trying to do with another author. But if Ronan and I didn't leave soon, we were going to miss supper with my dad.

He wanted to take Ronan and me out to celebrate our engagement. And even though we still had plenty of doors to knock on and people to call to raise money for Waldo’s Diner, we decided to take a little break. We needed to eat either way. And there was no way I would deny my father the pleasure of finally seeing me and Ronan together, engaged, when he had spent so much of my younger years trying to marry me off.

I stacked my paperwork neatly on my desk and then picked up my blazer and purse. Doing a final sweep of my office to make sure it was neat, I turned off the light, locked the door and left. The writers often worked longer than production did, especially in the drafting phase of a show, so I walked down the hallway and wasn't surprised when I still heard talking coming from the writing room.

I knocked gently on the door, and when someone called come in, I pushed it open. The room was a massive mess of scattered paper on the tables, whiteboards full of scribbles, and sticky notes posted on the wall. I didn't really understand the creative process, but I liked the results. I especially liked how happy it made Ronan.

The senior writer on the team, Douglas, looked at me and said, “Guess that's last call for you, Ronan.”

I laughed. “My dad would be pretty upset if we missed our reservation.”

“Go on,” Douglas said. “We're finishing up here anyway.”

Ronan nodded and then looked at him. “But I still think that the third act needs a little more, maybe a twist or something.”

Douglas pulled his lips to the side in thought. “I think you're on to something.”

Ronan said goodbye to Douglas and the two other writers, then packed up his messenger bag and followed me into the hallway. He put his arm around my shoulders and kissed my temple. “How was your day?”

“Good,” I said. “You?”

Under his breath, he said, “Douglas is making a terrible decision with this second plot line, but it's fine.” It sounded like he was still trying to convince himself of that fact.

Disagreements in the writing room weren't uncommon, and Ronan had learned over the years to pick his battles. Apparently, this was not one he wanted to fight over.

“Dad's excited to see us,” I said as we neared the building exit.

“I’m looking forward to it too,” Ronan said. “I feel like it's been forever since we've actually sat down and hung out with him.”

“Everything's been so busy here.” Story of my life. “And speaking of busy, we have another fundraiser to attend next week.”

He chuckled, shaking his head. “You know, at this rate, I feel like all the world's problems should be solved.
