Family Members Who Won’t Get Tested
One of the most frustrating things that someone diagnosed with celiac disease may encounter is the family member who won’t get tested. The more I talk to people who eat gluten-free and the more I learn about it, the more stories I hear about people whose close relatives probably have celiac disease and refuse to do anything about it. This can be incredibly difficult for the person (you) who has gone through the whole process of getting diagnosed, gone gluten-free, and is enjoying incredible benefits. You can’t stand to see your mother, your sister, your nephew, or even one of your own grown children continue to suffer.
We’ve heard about people who say they couldn’t live without bread so they don’t want to know. We’ve heard about people who refuse to believe anybody is really gluten-intolerant. We’ve heard about people who insist they have some other problem, even though many people in their own families have been diagnosed with celiac disease. We’ve even heard about family members who have decided that people who don’t eat gluten are just plain crazy (as they continue to suffer from digestive problems and ill health).
These attitudes are too bad because if you have family members with celiac disease, your chances of having it are much higher than someone’s chances in the general population. However, the fact is that you (probably) aren’t a doctor, and while you can take your underaged children to the doctor for testing, you can’t force your uncle or your brother or your grandchildren, for that matter, to get tested for celiac disease, and you certainly can’t decide that they have celiac disease.
You got tested, and that’s great. Even if you wish you didn’t have celiac disease (and who doesn’t wish that?), it’s better to know and do what it takes to heal. However, you can’t make that decision for anyone else.
Tempting as it is to be a gluten-free evangelist, all you can do is continue to live your life in the healthiest way possible and set a good example for others. Maybe they’ll come around, but if they don’t, it’s not your fault.
