ALABAMA SLAMMER

The recipe for this cocktail first appeared in the 1971 Playboy Bartender’s Guide by Thomas Mario and played a key role in the saga of Southern Comfort, which has a long and fascinating history (page 76). A decade later, bartenders modified the cocktail recipe to conform with changing tastes in alcohol consumption, and soon it became the classic college bar shot of the 1980s. Modern specs often call for orange juice in place of the more traditional lemon juice probably because of the insane popularity of the Tequila Sunrise (made famous in the 1970s by Bill Graham and the Rolling Stones). Pretty much every bar had a bottle or carton of OJ on hand but probably not lemon juice. This recipe rescues the slammer from its shoddy shot phase and returns it to its highball origins. Play “Alabama Song” by the Doors and sip it on a hot and steamy southern summer night.
