Shelby was still a bit shaken after last night’s book club and subsequent intervention with Joan.

As she tried to focus on her work at the bookstore, she couldn't help but think about how Joan felt today. Did she feel ganged up on? Did she feel judged?

Shelby didn't want her to feel either way. They just cared about her and wanted her to have a clean home.

Shelby had never really dealt with somebody who had a hoarding issue. She’d seen TV shows about it, but she had never understood it. Why would someone want to surround themselves with a bunch of stuff and trash? And in such a beautiful home?

She knew Joan was struggling with the grief of losing her husband six years ago, but a small part of her wondered why she couldn't move on? You can love someone, grieve their loss, and still move on with your life.

As she restocked the shelves in the gardening section, she also wondered about Joan’s family. Surely she had brothers or sisters or cousins? Where were these people? Why weren't they in her life?

Shelby had always been interested in these kinds of questions. It wasn't that she loved gossip, per se, but that she enjoyed hearing the stories of other people’s lives. She enjoyed learning about their relationships, their pasts, their quirks.

There were times she had even thought about becoming a fiction author herself, although she didn't think she had the talent for that. She wasn't sure exactly what her future held in the way of a career, but it didn't likely include publishing books.

She finished putting the last of the books up on the shelf and walked back to the front. The door opened just as she walked behind the counter, and Reed appeared.

"Hey there!" he said, smiling.

"Hey. What's going on?"

He pulled his hand from behind his back and held up a brown paper bag. "We had some leftovers at the restaurant during the lunch rush. I thought you might want something."

"Oh, yeah?" she said, smiling. She felt like a teenager again, with her high school crush giving her a Valentine's Day card.

"It's not much. A chicken Caesar salad. Do you like those?"

"I love those!" She reached her hand out and took the bag, looking inside. "What is this wrapped up?"

"Oh, that's a piece of our banana bread. Our pastry chef is amazing."

"I love banana bread too. Thank you for thinking of me."

He paused for a moment and then smiled. "If I'm being honest, you're pretty much all I've been thinking about since we had lunch the other day."

Shelby froze in place, unsure of what to say. It had been a very long time since any man had said something like that to her. Roger never said those sorts of things once they got out of the dating phase.

"Really?"

"Yes. And that's the other ulterior motive I had for coming here. I was wondering if you would go out on an official date with me, Shelby?”

"An official date? What does that include exactly?"

"Dinner, obviously.
