The phone call was thoroughly expected, but painful nonetheless. Thankfully, James called before she heard it on the news, though a quick flick of the remote and within thirty seconds of the phone ringing, CNN broke through with a special alert.

“I'm on my way to see you, Jess,” he said. Click.

No choice.

She called June and asked her to come and take the baby out for the day. A work issue, she said, and somehow June sensed from her tone that she shouldn't ask questions. Mercifully, her mom beat James to her house, bundling Sofia for a day at the park, the children's museum, a restaurant for lunch – whatever it took to leave Jessica alone at home for the day.

Hiding the truth from June had been a form of betrayal. Necessary pain, though. As the reality of Antonio''s death sank in, she would weep and wail and fall apart, and she needed a day to just let that happen. In the press, in Antonio's real life, she was no one. Nothing. Not even worth a mention or a glance or a raised eyebrow.

Yet she had been his world, and she his, for a short time.

Though he had promised to see her again, that had not happened, phone calls and texts sufficing. Scheduled for a dinner tonight, she had been choosing her outfit when the call came. Sudden cardiac arrest. No way to save him. He didn't suffer.

It was over.

The first sob came not as a wave of emotion, but as a tense, cramping flood of muscles that bent inward, curling her stomach into a “C,” the emotional pain morphing into a physical agony. If mourning took physical form it would look like this, her hands curled into clams, calves in charlie-horse screams, her body racked by a painful sob.

Then, a long, low exhale and her nasal passages, the back of her throat, her eyes, her vagina, all filled with warmth and flow and mucus and a biological seeping, her tissues a response to the insult of Antonio's death.

A death her milk had held at bay for months.

Tap tap tap. The knocks were more an alter system than a request for permission to enter, James crossing the room in five steps, his arms around her before she could even breathe. Or ask. He just knew, and the fact that he knew and acted and said not one word, but stroked her hair gently and whispered “Shhhhh” made her feel simultaneously guilty and thrilled and cared for and protected.

Everything she ever wanted.

How could it take death for her to have so much?

“He wasn't in pain,” James assured her, her face pressed into his chest. He smelled like campfires and wood and something sweet. She wondered about his life outside the office, away from Antonio.

“Will you lose your job now?” she asked, sniffing. It was a ludicrous question to ask, and she knew it. His incredulous laugh confirmed it.

“I'm not worried about my job. Or any job.” He peeled her off him, his warm arms strong and virile.
